Just purchased my third pair of Keen Austins in brown.Pros:-Toebox that won’t give you bunions, but in a non-minimalist shoe.-Lots of lace holes, which means you can tighten them up adequately across your arch-Heel does not slip-The toe-wrap sole, common to most Keen shoes, keeps them looking great for much longer than other shoes.-Look good enough to wear with slacks in informal but dressier situations (work, church, etc), but still work with jeans at a bar-Not at all sure how, but they never seem to get too hot, not even in the summer-Also don’t seem to get overly cold in the winter-They totally work for up to moderate hiking (anything that doesn’t require ankle support, really)-If I had to, I could even jog in themCons:There are only three cons. The first I can totally overlook, and I’m only bringing it up because I just got my third pair yesterday: they take FOR FREAKING EVER to break in. Like two weeks! I forget about this because they’re so perfect afterward but I’m currently walking around like Frankenstein. The second is that this model does change slightly over time. You can clearly see that accenting leather was used for the lace reinforce on my shoes: this is new. My last two pairs had identical leather all through the uppers. The more aggravating change was that my first pair of Austins did not have padding around the opening: it was just two layers of leather stitched. I’m sure they think it’s more comfortable this way but I also believe this is part of the break-in problem, and it also affects how they look. The most important con, the thing I REALLY wish they’d address (but they never will) is that they are a time bomb. It seems like I get 1.5-3 years of perfect use out of them, and then they just start disintegrating. The laces break, the sole delaminates, the upper comes unglued from the sole, stitches start to break, and it all happens within a month or two. I do understand that this is what you can expect from mass produced goods from India (and Keen is definitely on the top of that heap) and I do understand it’s in Keen’s interest to engineer them to a specific lifespan, but I would be willing to spend $50 more for shoes that would last another two years.Read more

Purchased these shoes to replace older pair of Keen Austins I purchased many years before. I have only worn these sporadically since purchased maybe 4 or 5 times max for short periods of time. Fit great and comfortably straight from the box. I am a big fan of Keen shoes for this reason. However, I brought these shoes with me on a trip last week and wore them one time walking through Ghent on a rainy afternoon for several hours and noticed when I returned to my apartment that the right heel had completely separated from the sole of my shoe (see photos). Needless to say that although purchased three years ago they are essentially unworn new shoes. I am very disappointed and hope the issue is a unfortunate defect rather than a decline in the quality of shoe I expect from this company.Read more

This is my second pair of Austin Keen’s (I’ve owned 5 pairs of diffrent styles) and I came back to this model because it gets the job done. I work on my feet all day for work. This shoe is sturdy and seems to keep my body from breaking down from the foundation. The only major caveat I will give the rookie Keen wearer is they take a long time to break in compared to a sneaker like Nike, or Adidas. Once they are broken in though, wow they last and seem to keep my feet from aching. Running Shoes only last me 6 months, these shoes about a year if not longer. The rubberized toe is a huge help with work just moving boxes and junk around without getting hurt. Also the shoe is a bit more classy/professional that the sneaker. So a win win. Ultimately this is a great value for something that will help your health in the long run to avoid hurting feet to the aching back and down the line.Read more

Let me begin by saying this is the fifth pair of KEEN’s I have purchased. I have the Austin Shoe in black as well. In all honesty, I can not remember how many years ago I purchased them. I knew what size to order because their sizing is very consistent. Keen are the most comfortable shoes (and work boots) I’ve worn. They’re made with extra room across the toe area so I don’t need to buy a wide size. I marked that I could wear them comfortably only for a couple hours. That’s a bit misleading, because I have diabetic myopathy, and wearing the shoes a “couple hours” is actually incredible! Anything else I can’t last very long without foot pain. To me, it all boils down to comfort and quality. My Doctor told me that when you try on new shoes, and they’re not completely comfortable from the beginning, don’t buy them! They aren’t going to stretch, you’re not going to grow into them, you shouldn’t need to break them in, they should feel like you could wear them all day long when you first try them. KEEN shoes fit that way for me. They Rock!Read more

Unfortunately, this was a defective pair of shoes. I took them on a trip with me to Europe a few days after receiving them. I noticed the eyelet rivet came apart after a couple uses, so stopped wearing them and figured I’d return them when I got back to the States. Well, I apparently didn’t pay attention to the drop dead date for returning this item. It was during my Europe trip, so I’m stuck with a defective pair of shoes. The rivet itself hasn’t pulled out of the shoe yet, but it’s only a matter of time.I also took a new pair of Keen Voyageur’s with me on the trip. Three or four days after I returned from the trip, one of the lace straps blew out. The return date deadline had also passed on this pair, so I’m stuck with a second pair of defective Keen’s. One pair was worn 2-3 times, the other pair for about one month.Keen’s have been my go to shoes for years, but I’ve got to rethink that strategy. Being 0 for 2 on my most recent purchases, and not being able to return two obviously defective pairs of shoes is not sitting well with me. I’ve either been extremely unlucky with these two pairs, or Keen’s quality control has slid downhillRead more
